Distance
Among continents of inner strength
yours excels at unknown pain.
No one can floor your soul
if ever it exists in the rice bowl.
Dialogues with the unconscious are forbidden
under the rule of Confucianism.
Silence expresses a whole bunch of emotions -
from discontentment, anger to love and confidence.
The inscrutable nature of a supra structure
descends across the South China Sea,
like the Iron Curtain without me.
Yet I often see you in my dreams.
Back in school days everything was great.
College girls like us flock on school buses
to lectures, canteens without a fuss
about where tomorrow will take us.
Back in those days,
your merry manners made my day.
Fragrance of youth pervaded the air in arrays.
Yet I stopped seeing you radiate
as time took away prime’s undeniable resonance.
First came the wedding then the children
on top of a profession of preaching silence.
Your parents were waiting to be fed
in a pension free society well bred.
“I feel like a single mom,”
you said everything felt like numb.
Your husband was gone for the Sunday service,
for God should be served without notice.
Years went by and I left my lullaby
for a continent of free individuals
who seem crazy in your beautiful eyes
of decency, control and compassion.
Yet I never know how you really feel
after swallowing so much of life’s misery wheels.
