Maki has just wiped out the entire Zenin clan—and today we’re breaking down why that massacre was inevitable, and why her own father was planning to kill her long before it happened.
With the Culling Game officially underway, each student from Jujutsu High was assigned a specific role. These roles weren’t random—they were carefully planned to maximize their chances of survival and success in the Culling Games.
Yuta Okkotsu was tasked with entering the Culling Game immediately. His job was reconnaissance: gather intel, understand how the game functions, and accumulate points early. This is especially important because Megumi’s sister must enter the Culling Game within the next ten days, and any information or points Yuta gains could be critical in protecting her later on.
Meanwhile, Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro were given a different objective: recruit a powerful ally who could fight alongside them. Their target was Kinji Hakari, a third-year student who’s currently suspended from Jujutsu High. Yuta even claimed that Hakari might be stronger than himself—though that statement is debated and not universally accepted.
Maki Zenin’s mission was to retrieve high-grade cursed tools stored by the Zenin clan. This is where things start getting complicated—because the Zenin clan was in the middle of a political civil war.
At this point, the clan was divided into two major factions:
The Megumi faction, which held legal authority
The conservative faction, made up of traditionalists clinging to the old hierarchy
Legally speaking, Megumi’s faction had complete control, because at the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Megumi Fushiguro was named the new head of the Zenin clan.
This decision shocked everyone, including Megumi himself. However, it stemmed from a long-standing deal made by Naobito Zenin, the former clan head. Years earlier, Naobito arranged for Megumi to be inducted into the clan because of his potential and his inherited cursed technique. That plan fell apart when Gojo intervened and canceled the agreement, costing the Zenin clan what could have been their greatest asset.
Naobito’s will included a contingency: if something ever happened to Gojo, Megumi would become clan head. During the Shibuya Incident, that condition was met. After Naobito’s death, his will officially transferred leadership to Megumi—and Maki later convinced him to accept the role.
In theory, this meant Maki should’ve been able to enter the Zenin estate freely and take any cursed tools she wanted. But reality was far harsher—because her father, Ogi Zenin, was actively planning to kill her.
There are three major reasons behind Ogi’s intent, starting with pure resentment. Ogi was the son of a former clan head, and both of his brothers—one before him, and Naobito after—became leaders of the Zenin clan. Ogi was the only sibling who never held the title, and that failure consumed him.
In his mind, Maki and Mai were the reason. Maki was born with little to no cursed energy and was relentlessly abused by the clan. Mai also failed to meet the clan’s standards. Ogi believed their perceived weakness ruined his reputation and cost him the position of clan head. He didn’t just resent his daughters—he wanted an excuse to eliminate them.
That excuse came when Megumi assumed leadership.
With Megumi as clan head, all Zenin assets legally transferred to him—something the conservative faction deeply opposed. However, killing Megumi outright wasn’t an option. He had strong political ties to both the Gojo and Kamo clans, and assassinating him without justification would have triggered severe consequences. This is why Naoya Zenin was labeled reckless for attempting to go after Megumi directly.
And that decision set off the chain of events that would ultimately lead to the complete destruction of the Zenin clan at Maki’s hands.
