Explore the queer heritage of those Buried in Brompton Cemetery with Queerly Departed!
Charles Allston Collins was the younger brother of 'Women in White' author Wilkie Collins and has posed something of a question to scholars, fans and the living descendants of Charles Dickens. His marriage to Kate, Dickens' favourite daughter, was far from conventional, spurning her to have an affair while she was married to him. Their relationship was not physical and family members tell of a widely held belief he may have been gay - so was he, or wasn't he? Figures like him fill our cemeteries: the archives offering no explanation as to whether he was or wasn't what we would identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
Queerly Departed was made possible with the Royal Parks using funding from the The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
