What happens when you mix raw industrial vibes, German precision, and a rebellious spirit? You get ROHLING, Berlin’s bold new furniture design brand, and their debut masterpiece: The Armchair Type 1. After half a decade of sketching, prototyping, failing, redoing, and dreaming, this chair finally hit the scene in late 2024, with a first edition of 100 pieces.
Core of the brand: minimalist lines. Edgy, unpolished soul. Visible screws, No welded joints and a design language that highlights the tools just as much as the object itself, because at ROHLING, it's not just about buying a piece of furniture, it's about making it, owning it, and living it. Like in fashion, the focus is on creating an experience, one that blurs the line between maker and user.
We visited their Berlin studio and sat down with founder & co-designer Gil Russ, and co-designer Brian Chen, to dive deep into what it really takes to create a chair that’s anything but ordinary.
Who is ROHLING? Why does construction matter as much as concept? Hit play to find out.
