The day after our gig in Sandakan, we were all set to check out this notorious water village that's got a rep with the authorities for all sorts of shady stuff, but locals really know it for being a hub of human trafficking, drug deals, arms trading, and gangster action. You're probably wondering, why bother visiting a place like that? Well, why not, right?
Our local buddy hooked us up with a boat at the crack of 9 am, and we were ready to dive into the thick of it. We bounced from our Airbnb to a nearby coffee joint, all geared up to meet our guide. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?), the guy who was supposed to show us around didn't show up on time. When he finally did, the afternoon was already slipping away.
So, we switched up the game plan. Now, we're making our way to the Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sepilok, about 23 clicks from Sandakan Town. It seemed like the perfect escape from the scorching heat of Sandakan.
We did a quick Google search and found out about the main attraction at RDC – a crazy 620-meter-long canopy walkway. This Skywalk takes you high up among the tall jungle trees, like 25 meters off the ground.
RDC also gets some international love for being an Important Bird Area (IBA). So, it's shaping up to be the ideal spot for us to kick back, soak in some nature, and hopefully spot some wild critters.
