With 1.800 spectators in attendance at the MWS Arena, Turkey and Spain fought for a spot in the gold medal game at the 26th edition of the Albert Schweitzer Tournament. Turkey was not able to control their opponent‘s well-known transition and high percentage shooting. In the 76-90 (24-25, 15-21, 18-18, 19-26) defeat Burak Yildizli‘s shined with 23 points, Josep Perez led Spain with 26 points to the victory.
Spain started into the game with some red-hot shooting from long range. Point guard Josep Perez hit two triples in a row for an early lead (4-8, 2.). Turkey, know for some fierce intensity, stroke back with a 13-2 run to swing things around in their favour (17-10, 6.). Head coach Juan Orenga called for time to re-arrange his troops, that answered with couple more treys en route to be on top again at the end of the first stanza (24-25, 10.).
It did not take long for Turkey to be on target again. Led by Burak Yildizli, who would go on to score a total 21 first half points on nine of twelve shooting (.750 percent), the momentum shifted once again (33-26, 14.). It was up two Perez to chip in another deuce of triples midway through a 13-2 spanish spurt to turn things around (35-39, 17.). Turkey head coach Erhan Toker called for time, but his team could not stop Perez and Co. running wild in transition to hold on to the lead (39-46, 20.).
Ilimane Diop opened the third stanza with one fine jam against two defenders, before Perez neiled his overall fifth three pointer of the night (48-57, 26.). Turkey rallied back to cut it to a three point deficit (55-58, 28.), but could not do enough to really stop Spain‘s offense (57-64, 30.).
An ongoing shooting exhibition combined with several key rebounds were the main reasons Spain Spain extended the lead to double figures (61-72, 33.). Turkey used multiple time outs to discuss possible options of how to launch a comeback. Whatever they tried, Yildizli and Co. could not crack their opponent‘s confidence. In the final minute Turkey had strike from beyond the perimeter in order to hope for a miracle … which did not become a reality tonight.
Spain showed some fine outside shooting. Orenga‘s team hit four of six from downtown in the opening period, followed by two out of three before halftime. Things – or in this case: percentages – did not change for the Spaniards in the third period, connecting for another two out of three. In the final period the eventual winners went zero out of two from deep for an overall 8/14 for the game (.571 percent).
