Helsingin poliisisoittokunnan tilaussävellys orkesterin 70-vuotisjuhliin vuonna 2017.

"Sävellystyön alkusysäyksenä oli ylikapellimestari Ruusuvuoren innostava ohje käyttää puhallinorkesteria täysin vapaasti, vailla paineita noudattaa perinteisiä kokoonpanolle kirjoittamisen tapoja.

Aloitettuani sävellystyön huomasin nauttivani suunnattomasti asioiden muuttumisesta toisiksi, ”morfaantumisesta”. Olivat muutokset sitten äkillisiä tai pitkäksi venytettyjä, vaivihkaisia tai alleviivattuja, niistä tuli sävellyksen sykkivä ydin.

Teoksen lähtökohdaksi tuli perinteinen peruspilarikolmikko ”koti, uskonto ja isänmaa”. Lähdin pohtimaan miten nämä käsitteet ovat historian saatossa muuttuneet. Innostuin teollistumisen vaikutuksesta kotiin; siitä miten ihmiset muuttivat suurten kaupunkien ahtauteen, miten ihmisjoukkojen täyttämien teollisuuskaupunkien identiteetit ensimmäistä kertaa hahmottuivat.

Ensimmäisessä osassa kuullaan mm. suurta työläisjoukkoa, valtavien teollisuuskoneiden jyskytystä ja suurten massojen kaatumista mammuttimaisiin sammioihin.
Toinen osa on virsi. Rivien välissä välkkyy muinaisen ihmisen vakava hiljaisuus luonnon edessä. Lopussa löytyy myös jonkinlainen ”körttiläinen heimotunne”.

Viimeinen osa on kommentti isänmaamme amerikkalaistumisesta, karikatyyri kaiken pukemisesta kalifornialaiseen karkkipaperiin ja menestysuskovaiseen näennäisideologiaan.

Kaiken ytimessä on kuitenkin orkesteri sosiaalisena yhteisönä, se joukkuepelaamisen tunne, joka tekee yhdessä soittamisesta niin ylivoimaisen hienoa."

The work was commissioned by Helsinki Police Symphonic Band on its 70th Anniversary in 2017.

Helsinki Police Symphonic Band is conducted by the chief conductor Sami Ruusuvuori.

"The initial impetus for the composition was the inspiring instructions from the chief conductor Ruusuvuori to use the wind orchestra completely freely without the pressure to follow the traditional compositional methods.

When I started composing, I found myself enjoying tremendously the change in things, “morphing”. Whether the changes were sudden or long-stretched, concealed or underlined, they became the pulsating core of the composition.

The work was based on the traditional trio of “home, religion and homeland”. I set out to explore how these concepts have changed over time. I got excited about the impact of industrialization on the home; about how people migrated to the congestion of big cities and how the identities of the crowded industrial cities first took shape.

In the first movement you will hear e.g. a large crowd of workers, the pounding of the huge industrial machinery and the fall of large masses into the mammoth vats.

The second movement is a hymn. Between the staves glimmers the solemn silence of the ancient man facing nature. At the end there is also some kind of “körtti tribal feeling”, drawing influence from the Christian Protestant revivalist körtti movement.

The last movement is a commentary on the Americanization of our homeland, a caricature of putting everything on Californian candy wrapper and dipping it in the quasi-ideological religion of success.

At the heart of it all though, is the orchestra as a social community, the sense of team play that makes playing together so overwhelmingly great."
