Darius Milhaud’s (1892-1974), 1923, genre-bending ballet, “La Création du monde”, Op. 81a is heard here in an arrangement for piano and string quartet. The original ballet, “La Création du Monde”, is about the creation of the world, as told by different African mythologies. This piece is an early example of European classical music, being influenced by African American music of the time. However, Milhaud’s use of jazz idioms in this work went somewhat further than most of his European contemporaries. Like other 20th-century ballet masterpieces such as Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” and Bartok’s “Miraculous Mandarin”, its music is often performed independently of the choreography. This arrangement showcases Milhaud’s forward-thinking inventiveness.
