My practice day on the Chickahominy River in the coastal area of Virginia. As an offshoot of the James Rives the Chick (as it's known locally) is a tidal body of water. This presents some interesting challenges when approaching it. The tides swing on a 6hr schedule, and this causes the water level to fluctuate quite a bit, and as a result the fish change locations quite a bit as they jockey for the best positions to ambush their prey. At low tide the fish are mostly concentrated to areas of deeper water, while on the high tides they fan out across the flats and other areas searching for crabs or other things that are freshly underwater.
During this day the tide was low at the beginning with it slowly starting to creep up over the 6hrs of the incoming. The fish were still in quite a few of their low tide locations and I was able to pick a few off in the current breaks behind some of the cypress trees that lines the river. The importance of finding places where the fish could ambush prey while still being out of the current was key to all of this. As the tide reached full pool the fishing definitely slowed down, but I was able to still pick off a few here and there. I was able to catch some from the grass mats that lines parts of the river including the days largest, a 20.25 that came from a small pocket of grass outside of a cove.
Even though the @OldTownCanoeKayak Autopilot 136 is the largest kayak they make, it still handled the tight spaces of the river beautifully.
