The final stage of the Camino Portugués Central Route from Padrón to Santiago de Compostela is a significant and fulfilling segment of the pilgrimage. This route covers about 24 kilometers (15 miles) and is filled with historical and spiritual landmarks, leading to the grand finale at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Key Highlights:
Padrón: The town where, according to tradition, the boat carrying Saint James’s remains arrived. Key sites include the Church of Santiago de Padrón and the Pedrón stone.
Iria Flavia: Just after leaving Padrón, you pass through Iria Flavia, an ancient Roman town with a rich history. The Church of Santa María a Maior, where Nobel Prize-winning author Camilo José Cela is buried, is worth a visit.
Esclavitude: As you continue, you’ll come across the Sanctuary of A Esclavitude, a beautiful Baroque church that has been a significant site of pilgrimage.
Rúa de Francos: A small village where you can see the historic stone cross, or “cruceiro,” that is said to mark an ancient boundary of Santiago’s influence.
Milladoiro: As you near Santiago, you reach Milladoiro, where you catch your first glimpse of the spires of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in the distance.
Arrival in Santiago de Compostela: The route enters the city, leading you to the Obradoiro Square in front of the magnificent Cathedral. This is the culmination of your pilgrimage, where pilgrims traditionally embrace the statue of Saint James and attend the Pilgrim’s Mass.
This final stretch is emotionally powerful, as pilgrims reflect on their journey and anticipate the arrival at the Cathedral. The sense of achievement upon reaching Santiago is profound, and many take time to soak in the atmosphere of this historic city.
