The WHO Constitution defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” In reality, this is an unattainable ideal for the overwhelming majority of people.
At the same time, by declaring the highest possible level of health as a basic human right, WHO implicitly recognizes that other, lesser levels of health exist. In fact, everyone possesses some degree of health, and people with illness often need even more of it — since part of their health must be spent to counterbalance disease.
The key mistake of WHO’s definition is the assumption that health and disease are contradictory states. In truth, they are coexisting measures, interacting continuously within the same person.
More about this fundamental error — and its practical consequences — can be found in my books, available on Amazon and Google Play.
