In this video, I give background and intuition for two challenge problems from Stewart’s Calculus that are best solved using continuity rather than computation.
One problem is motivated by the shell theorem from physics, and the other by the Borsuk–Ulam Theorem from topology. While these results aren’t required to solve the problems, they explain why the conclusions must be true.
The goal is to show how continuity guarantees the existence of solutions — even when formulas look complicated.
