In this video, we explain the Isohyetal Method for determining average precipitation over an area. The Isohyetal Method is a widely used technique in hydrology that involves drawing isohyets—contour lines of equal rainfall—to estimate precipitation distribution accurately.
Procedure:
1. Plot Rain Gauge Data: Mark rainfall measurements from different stations on a map.
2. Draw Isohyets: Connect points with equal precipitation to form contour lines.
3. Determine Isohyetal Areas: Measure the area between consecutive isohyets.
4. Compute Weighted Average Precipitation: Multiply each area by its corresponding precipitation value and sum up.
5. Divide by Total Area: Obtain the final average precipitation over the entire region.
This method provides more accurate rainfall estimates compared to the Arithmetic Mean Method and Thiessen Polygon Method, making it ideal for hydrological analysis and water resources engineering.
