PAINTING IRELAND (Part 8) - The Gap of Dunloe
The Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass that separates MacGillycuddy’s Reeks in the west from the Purple Mountains in the East. It was formed some 25,000 years ago during Ireland’s last ice age as a result of what is known amongst glaciologists as a GLACIAL BREACH, slowly carving out the U-shaped valley we see today.
It is such an awe-inspiring place that one of my biggest problems was actually choosing which view to paint. I settled on a view looking up the valley from the small beach by Lake Augher – towards an area at which the valley reaches its narrowest, and arguably its most spectacular, point.
