As Checkpoint marks 12 years on air, this in-depth conversation tackles one of South Africa’s most controversial and least examined social questions. Are boys being left behind and what does that mean for the future of the country?

In this episode Nkepile Mabuse speaks with author Dr Mzamo Masito (PhD) about his book This Country Hates Our Boys. The discussion challenges the idea that gender equality is a zero-sum game and asks whether South Africa can meaningfully address gender-based violence crime and social breakdown without confronting the crisis facing boys and men.

The conversation explores masculinity in South Africa, absent fathers, single motherhood and the long-term impact of childhood trauma on male identity.
