Orlando Gibbons 1583-1625 was one of the finest composers of Elizabethan England along with his contemporaries John Bull and William Byrd.
To most people his name is likely to be associated with Choral Music both Sacred and Secular
In particular his well known Madrigal The Silver Swan..
He composed many instrumental works for viols, organ and virginals and was a brilliant keyboard player.
For the last 2 years of his life he was Organist of Westminster Abbey.
The of Fantazia of Foure Parts is a keyboard masterpiece in the style of the vocal motets.
In these the contrapuntal texture, that of " four voices " is similar to Bach fugues but instead consist of a series of various "points' in the course of the work not a working out of a single subject as in Bach.
The performance must convey the feeling of vocal writing; its texture and fluidity.
The quiet meditative opening "point" of 4 whole notes leads gradually to an extraordinary syncopated climax, a sense of "rapture", before the shock of the final A major chord.
