Why Sydney Isn't the Capital of Australia

Many of us north of the equator might or might not have mistakenly though that Sydney was the capital of Australia. Yeah, turns out that honor actually goes to a city called Canberra, which was actually built to be the capital of Australia. So why is Canberra the capital of Australia?
