In this rare and intimate 1957 audio interview, the renowned Swiss theologian Karl Barth—widely regarded as one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the 20th century—speaks candidly from his modest home on the outskirts of Basel, Switzerland. Conducted by American journalist and broadcaster Milton Mayer as part of the acclaimed "Voices of Europe" series (produced in cooperation with the University of Chicago and the National Association of Educational Broadcasters), this conversation captures Barth at age 70, reflecting deeply on humanity's progress, God's sovereign peace, and the calling of Christians in a fractured world.
Barth, author of the monumental Church Dogmatics and architect of the Barmen Declaration (which resisted Nazi ideology in the 1930s), offers no easy optimism. He cautions that material "progress" (even the abolition of slavery) often gives way to new forms of oppression, and insists that true advancement lies not in human achievement but in humble obedience to God's revealed will. He emphasizes that all people—European and American alike—are "in the same boat," facing the same ultimate realities under divine judgment and grace.
