Anne of Cleves, 1539, Modern Recreation

Modern recreation of Anne of Cleves (born in 1515), who was the fourth wife of King Henry VIII of England. Their brief marriage, lasting from January 6 to July 9, 1540, was primarily a political alliance. Anne’s portrait, painted by Hans Holbein the Younger, played a pivotal role in their union. However, upon meeting Anne in person, Henry infamously declared, “I like her not! I like her not!” The discrepancy between the enchanting painting and the reality, led to their annulled marriage. Their marriage was declared unconsummated after six months, and Anne was not crowned queen consort. Despite the annulment, Henry provided Anne with a generous settlement, and she remained in England, known as the “King’s Beloved Sister.” Though disregarded by some as the “ugly one,” Anne’s survival outlasted the reign of Henry VIII and the rest of his wives, making her a remarkable figure in Tudor history.🌹👑
