Tsunoshima is an island with a population of approximately 600 people located at the northwest tip of Yamaguchi Prefecture in the Sea of Japan (Hibikinada) in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
This island is included in Kitanagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park. This is Makizaki, located at the northern tip of Tsunoshima.

This area is covered with volcanic rock called basalt, which tells the story of Tsunoshima's origins as a result of eruptions in ancient times.
You can also see columnar joints, which look like upright columns with a hexagonal cross section.
When lava and magma cool and solidify, their volume decreases slightly and they shrink.
When lava or magma cools and shrinks, it forms pentagonal or hexagonal columnar cracks, which are called columnar joints.
It is said to be solidified lava that erupted from volcanic activity during the late Neogene Miocene period (approximately 8.5 million years ago), and is called "San'in volcanic rock."
