Today we are going to learn how to play the 1965 Grammy award winning record of the year "Girl from Ipanema" with music by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The Portuguese lyrics were written by Vinícius de Moraes and later the English lyrics were written later by Norman Gimbel. When Astrud song the song and recorded the English version she was chosen because she was the only one that could speak English. She didn't have training in singing so she was taken advantage of and only paid 120 dollars for her recording, a payment that was justified because "she didn't know how to sing" but her lack of training also lead to the iconic performance that the whole world knows and loves.

The song follows an AABA format like most Jazz pop songs from that time, when you really dig into Bossa Nova you'll see it has rhythmic roots in Samba but takes a lot of its harmonic ideas from the Jazz influence. As with all jazz standards you'll find this song performed in every key but you'll also see that certain keys get favored as the "standard" key making it easier to link up and jam. One of the things that is interesting about that is the most common key for the English version is in F and the most common version in Portuguese, or we can also say the most common Brazilian version, is in Db. I created my version based on English sheet music in the key of F but found that it went way to high up the fretboard and decided on the key of C, C having the same vibe as the Db but much easier. If you want to play along with the Brazilian recordings you can put a capo on the 1st fret or you can tune your ukulele up a half step.
