مجھے پورا یقین ہے کہ شیعہ مسلم کمیونٹی کے بہترین مفاد میں یہ ہو گا کہ میرا جانشین کوئی ایسا نوجوان ہو جس کی پرورش اور تربیت حالیہ برسوں میں نئے دور کے تقاضوں کے مطابق ہوئی ہو اور جو امام کے منصب کو ایک نیا رُخ دینے کا اہل ہو۔ اس وجہ سے اگرچہ وہ میرا براہ راست وارث نہیں ہے، میں اپنے پوتے کریم کو، جو میرے بیٹے علی کا بیٹا ہے، آغا خان کا خطاب استعمال کرنے کا حق دیتا ہوں اور اپنے تمام پیروکاروں کا امام اور پیر مقرر کرتا ہوں۔‘
سر سلطان محمد آغا خان سوم کی آخری وصیت میں موجود یہ الفاظ تھے جن کی بدولت سنہ 1958 میں ان کے پوتے کریم کو اپنے والد پرنس علی خان کے بجائے موروثی پیشوا اور اسماعیلی برادری کا روحانی سربراہ مقرر کیا گیا۔

"I am fully confident that, for the benefit of the Shia Muslim community, it is in the best interest that my successor be a young individual raised and educated in line with the demands of the current era. Someone who is capable of bringing a new perspective to the position of the Imam. While he may not be my direct heir, I grant the right to use the title of Aga Khan to my grandson, Karim, the son of my son, Ali, and appoint him as the spiritual leader for all my followers."

These were the words found in the last will and testament of Sultan Muhammad Aga Khan III. Due to these words, in 1958, his grandson Karim was appointed as the hereditary leader and the spiritual head of the Ismaili community, succeeding his father Prince Ali Khan.

This historical transition marked a significant chapter in the Aga Khan family's legacy.
