I used a new colorization technique, fully restored, and created immersive sound design for this rare footage — Electric Tram Rides from Forster Square, Bradford (1902) — offering a vivid glimpse into Edwardian England. Through advanced restoration and colorization, this film brings to life the bustling streets of Bradford at the height of its industrial glory. Once a modest market town, Bradford had rapidly transformed into Britain’s wool capital — a city of grand architecture and energetic street life, though shadowed by pollution and hardship. Among the scenes, two Mitchell & Kenyon assistants can be seen directing pedestrians, while a group of elegantly dressed young women are asked to walk past the camera twice — a charming early example of staged filmmaking.

🎬 Mitchell & Kenyon – British Cinema Pioneers
Mitchell & Kenyon were among the most important pioneers of early British cinema at the turn of the 20th century. Based in Blackburn, Sagar Mitchell—an optician and technical innovator—and James Kenyon—an entrepreneur with industrial roots—played a crucial role in shaping the language of early moving images.
In 1897, they developed the “Norden” cinematograph, a major technical advancement that significantly reduced image flicker, mechanical noise, and film wear. This innovation allowed for smoother and more stable projections, setting their work apart from many contemporaries.
Mitchell & Kenyon filmed everyday life across Britain: factory workers leaving mills, busy markets, street scenes, public processions, sporting events, royal visits, and local celebrations. Their films were widely shown at fairs and theaters, captivating audiences who were often seeing themselves on screen for the first time.
They are also well known for their reconstructions of the Boer War, staged in England due to the high cost of filming overseas, as well as for early narrative films combining real locations with dramatized scenes. Their work provides an extraordinarily authentic visual record of Edwardian society.
With the rise of large-scale film production and American dominance in the industry, their business declined after 1913, and the partnership ended in the early 1920s. Many of their films were believed lost until a major rediscovery in the 1990s, which brought renewed international recognition.
Today, the films of Mitchell & Kenyon are regarded as an invaluable historical archive, preserving everyday life, movement, and human presence from the dawn of cinema.
