Unit 2 of Nursing Education focuses on the foundations of assessment and planning, essential components of the teaching–learning process. Assessment refers to the systematic collection of information about learners’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and educational needs. It helps educators understand students’ learning levels and plan effective teaching strategies. Assessments may be formative (continuous, during learning) or summative (at the end of a unit or course). Various methods include written tests, oral exams, practical evaluations, assignments, OSCE, and clinical performance assessment.
Planning is the second major element which involves designing a structured educational experience based on assessment results. It includes defining learning objectives, choosing appropriate teaching methods, selecting instructional materials, and organizing content systematically. Lesson planning is an important tool that outlines the objectives, content, methods, media, and evaluation tools used for teaching.
Effective assessment and planning ensure that teaching becomes learner-centered, objective-based, and outcome-oriented. They help educators identify learning difficulties early, provide timely feedback, and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching programs.
For nursing students, understanding assessment and planning is essential to develop competence in patient education, clinical teaching, and professional development. These foundations support the delivery of high-quality nursing education and promote lifelong learning.
