Reading & Northern 425: Cab Ride on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

How you ever wondered what was involved in operating the loudest steam locomotive in the United States? Well if you were, or even if you weren't, heres your answer! On September 6th, 2020, I was lucky enough to document what was involved while operating Reading & Northern 425, which is revered as the loudest steam locomotive in the United States. Watch, as the fireman shovels coal into the firebox and the engineer blows the whistle, as the 425 thunders through the Lehigh Gorge, creating a deafening pound each time the wheels turn. In this video, shes wearing a Southern Longbell Ps-4 3 Chime whistle.

Reading & Northern #425 is a 4-6-2 Pacific Type Steam Locomotive Built by the Baldwin Locomotive works in 1928 for the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad. She is the first of two G-1 Type locomotives for the GM&N (425 and later scrapped 426). When the locomotives went to the GM&O, they became 580 (425), and 582 (426). 425 traveled to many other railroads, such as the Louisiana & Eastern, Valley Forge Scenic Railway, Wilmington & Western, and the Blue Mountain & Reading where she ran alongside 2102. Now, the BM&R is the RBM&N, or R&N for short, and was acquired when Conrail went out of business. In 1992, 425 was painted in her famous Blue Paint Scheme in honor of the Reading Crusader. In 2011 425 was given roller bearings by the Strasburg Railroad, and in 2015 painted to her current blue, a GM&N "Road of Service" inspired paint scheme.
