5th Grade Math 8.2, Word Problem Solving, Use Multiplication for Fraction Division

We can use the strategy draw a diagram to write a multiplication equation to help us solve a fraction division problem. We can draw a circle or rectangle to represent each whole unit in the problem. Then we can use the fraction in the problem to divide each circle or rectangle into equal-size pieces. This will help us write a multiplication sentence that will represent our diagram. A diagram allows us to organize information given in a word problem. It also helps us visualize the situation. Remembering that multiplication and division are inverse operations will help us to write multiplication sentences to solve division problems. The denominator of the fraction tells us how many parts will be in each whole. Unit fractions have 1 as a numerator. When the numerator is greater than 1, we can divide by the denominator, then multiply by the numerator. We solve five word problems that involve dividing wholes by a fraction.
