During Women’s Day celebrations at State House Entebbe in 1984, President Milton Obote’s wife, Mama Miria gave a brilliant, if impassioned speech, saying hardly anything had been done for Women Emancipation.
At that time, there was only one woman MP in a house of 140; there was no woman cabinet minister; no woman permanent secretary; there was no woman judge; Makerere University had one woman professor… Mama Miria even begged for free primary education.
