初名石閔，乃後趙皇帝石虎的養孫，石虎待他就如同親孫兒一般。果斷敏銳，以勇猛著稱。後趙授遊擊將軍，封修成侯。數從征伐，屢立戰功。石虎死後，擁立石鑒，然後屠胡滅石。
青龍元年（350年），即位稱帝，恢復冉姓，建立魏國，史稱冉魏，改元永興。
永興三年（352年），兵敗突圍不遂，遭前燕太原王慕容恪擊敗，後為燕王慕容儁所擒，斬於遏陘山，追諡武悼天王。冉閔的玄孫冉華（染華）的墓誌銘則稱冉閔為“平帝”。

In the first year of Qinglong (350 years), he ascended the throne and became emperor, restored the ran surname, established the state of Wei, historically known as ran Wei, and changed the yuan to Yongxing.
In the third year of Yongxing (352), the army was defeated and failed to break through the siege. It was defeated by murongke, king of Taiyuan, former Yan. Later, it was captured by murongyu, king of Yan. It was beheaded in juixing mountain and pursued the posthumous title of Wu to mourn the heavenly king. The epitaph of Ran min's xuansun ran Hua (ran Hua) called ran Min "emperor Ping".
