Hi, this is Michelle. We will continue working on Czerny’s Op. 599. In this lesson, we will learn exercises no. 61 and 62. Czerny was an Austrian composer, pianist and teacher who was born in 1791 and died in 1857. Czerny was a prolific composer who did more than one thousand compositions. His finger exercises are still widely used in piano teaching today.
When practicing, make sure 1) Sit Straight; 2) Relax Shoulders; 3) Level Hands; 4) Curve Fingers; 5) Use Fingertips: 6) Follow Fingerings as much as you can.
In no. 61, the key is in C major. It is in common 4/4 time, and each quarter note gets 1 beat. There are 4 beats per bar. The tempo is allegro, meaning fast. The music is in the AABB binary form. This finger exercise focuses on scale passages and Alberti bass. There are 16th rests in bar 1, 3, 9, 10, and on, and the rests must be precise. In no. 62, the key is in G major with 1 sharp, F#. It is in 3/8 time, and each 8th note gets 1 beat. There are 3 beats per bar. It is in the AABB binary form. The tempo is vivace, meaning fast and lively. The harmony is based on the primary triads I, IV and V. In bar 17 to 24, the left hand has the melody, and the right hand the accompaniment. One must keep a good balance between them.
