Mechanism Design and Platform Capitalism with Salomé Viljoen, Jake Goldenfein, & Lee McGuigan

The conversation with Salomé Viljoen, Jake Goldenfein, and Lee McGuigan about their recent essay, "Design choices: Mechanism design and platform capitalism," was live-streamed to the public on Thursday 7 April at 7 PM EST.

Salomé Viljoen is an Academic Fellow at Columbia Law School. She is also a former Fellow and current Affiliate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. Salomé's current work is on the political economy of social data. This work explores how law structures data production and downstream uses of data-intensive technologies, and how law might facilitate more egalitarian data production.

Jake Goldenfein is a law and technology scholar studying the nature of law in computational society. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at Melbourne Law School. He has been a researcher at Cornell Tech, Cornell University, New York Law School, and the Swinburne Institute for Social Research in the fields of media and communications history and theory, intellectual property, communications policy, privacy, and media law.

Lee McGuigan is an Assistant Professor in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously, he was a research fellow at Cornell Tech's Digital Life Initiative. He studies the history and political economy of advertising, media, and information technology to examine knowledge infrastructures and logistical processes in the advertising and media industries.
