Japanese fishermen don drag to honour the gods of the sea | 大瀬まつり

At the northern edge of the Izu Peninsula, the sea meets ritual.

Each spring at Ōsezaki, fishermen take to the water in drag — a practice rooted not in performance, but belief. By reversing appearances and loosening roles, misfortune is confused, and the unpredictable spirits of the sea are appeased.

Filmed while travelling solo, this chapter follows the Ose Matsuri, from the quiet hours just after sunrise, to the arrival of elaborately decorated boats. An observational take on a regional tradition.

This film is part of an ongoing matsuri series, documenting local festivals across Japan — not as spectacles, but as lived traditions shaped by place, memory, and belief.

伊豆半島の北端、大瀬崎。
ここでは春になると、海とともに生きる人々の祭りが行われる。

漁師たちは**ドラァグ（女装）**の姿で船に乗り、海へと向かう。
それは演出ではなく、
姿や役割を反転させることで災厄を惑わせ、
気まぐれな海の存在を鎮めるための信仰に基づく行為だ。

本作は、ひとり旅の中で記録した
**Ose Matsuri**の一日を描く。
夜明け前の静けさから、色鮮やかな船の到着まで、
外から訪れた視点で、この土地の時間に寄り添っていく。
