Avenida 18 de Julio, Montevideo, Uruguay Virtual Walking Tour (4K)

Hi everyone, I filmed this walking tour on June 20th at around 4:30 PM. This walk follows the entire length of Avenida 18 de Julio from the Obelisk of Montevideo to Plaza Independencia. This is a distance of about 3.5km or 2.2 miles.

On this walk, we'll see a number of Montevideo landmarks including Obelisco a los Constituyentes de 1830 at Bulevar (Olelisk of Montevideo), Plaza de los Treinta y Tres Orientales, Biblioteca Nacional de Uruguay (the National Library of Uruguay), Intendencia de Montevideo (a municipal administration building), Plaza De Cagancha, Plaza Libertad, Plaza Juan Pedro Fabini, Plaza Independencia, Palacio Salvo, Puerta de la Ciudadela (Gateway of the Citadel, Palacio Estevez, and a number of other significant and historic buildings. There is some incredible art deco architecture here. Of course, we'll also pass by plenty of ordinary Uruguayan people going about their day-to-day lives in the capital city.

Avenida 18 de Julio is Montevideo's main avenue. It is named after the date that Uruguay's first constitution was signed into law 18 July, 1830. The western end of the street starts at Plaza Independencia. This is also the border of the old city (Ciudad Vieja). The avenue passes through the neighborhoods of Centro and Cordón. It ends in the neighborhood of Tres Cruces at the Obelisk of Montevideo.

Avenida 18 de Julio is not the widest or longest road in Montevideo. It is certainly the most important. The street is lined with shops, restaurants, historic buildings, plazas, and tourist attractions.

While wandering around the city, I noticed that this was, by far, the busiest street. At all hours of the day, it was bustling. Interestingly, if I walked a block or two off Avenida 18 de Julio, the city became a ghost town. It felt a little odd.

I filmed this video just after arriving in Montevideo. The bus dropped me off at Tres Cruces station. From there, I walked along Avenida 18 de julio to my accommodation. I stayed in an Airbnb in Palacio Salvo, one of Montevideo's most beautiful and historic buildings.
