I started to play Clawhammer banjo because Vangoa sent me a number of 5 string Banjos First the first three I tried to play Bluegrass. I bought a book and I did "okay" but it never really jelled for me. Then a couple of other companies sent me 5 string and I would relearn the blue grass stuff but again I didn't care for it. So I gave away 2 banjos and sold a few. BUT then Vangoa sent me a gorgeous Maple open back banjo that had the sweetest Sound. I again started by doing the blue grass but I actually found myself picking up that banjo long after the unboxing video was made. I wondered why I had to use finger picks. They hurt my fat fingers and I didn't like the "SHARP" sound. SO, I just started to make up stuff by using my fingers. Then it hit me that I should google "finger picking banjo" and lo and behold CLAWHAMMER came up instantly .I couldn't believe it because I was kinda criticized by the blue grass folks for not using the picks in a couple of songs on the videos etc. I NEVER even knew there was a legitimate style for using fingers. I was ecstatic and I went on my banjo journey. I did buy a really nice banjo from Goldtone which I LOVE but it's a bit heavy. Then 6 months into my clawhammer journey I saw that Goldtone started to make nylon string fretless banjos for very reasonable. So with the money I got for my 59th birthday I bought it. Well I do love the sound BUT fretless is very hard. I used it for over a year and still play it but I had a lot of stops and starts do to illness and a hand surgery. HOWEVER, I did contact Vangoa and ask them if they could make a nylon string banjo. It took two years but they did it. I have given them a whole bunch of suggestions for future versions but in the meantime this one is extremely pretty sounding and very playable. I took the back off and now it's light as a feather. I hope you can watch the whole video because there are some tips you can do to get the most out of this banjo.
