At the India Today Conclave, water conservationist Rajendra Singh revealed a shocking fact: 70% of funds meant for water projects in India are being taken by contractors, worsening the country’s water crisis. He criticized governments since independence for taking control of water management and removing communities’ traditional rights. In a discussion called Pani Bai, the Water Wives of Maharashtra, the panel highlighted how water scarcity hits women the hardest, as they often bear the burden of fetching water. Filmmaker Kiran Rao from the Pani Foundation shared how community-led water conservation efforts in Maharashtra, driven by women, are making a big difference. Poonam Muthreja from the Population Foundation of India called the water crisis a gender issue, saying things might be different if men had to fetch water.
