Climbing Cima Grappa to the War Memorial - Tour De Pasta Stage 2

Join me on an unforgettable summer ride starting from Bassano del Grappa on 30 June 2025, as I take on one of the most iconic climbs in northern Italy: the ascent to Monte Grappa via Romano d’Ezzelino.

Filmed with a chest-mounted action cam for a full first-person experience, this video captures the raw effort, serene beauty, and deep history of this legendary mountain.

As the sun rises over the Veneto region, the road winds steeply through thick forests, eventually opening up to sweeping highland pastures filled with grazing cows and the unmistakable sound of their bells. 🚴‍♂️🐄

The summit, known as Cima Grappa (1,776 m), holds the Sacrario Militare del Monte Grappa, a solemn World War I memorial where over 22,000 soldiers—Italians and Austro-Hungarians—are buried. Walking to the top of the shrine by foot, I reflect on the sacrifice made in these very mountains over a century ago. 🇮🇹🕊️

After paying tribute at the memorial, I begin the descent back to Bassano, enjoying panoramic views over the Venetian plains and the Dolomitic foothills.

📍 Did You Know?

The Monte Grappa Massif was a critical defensive front in World War I, especially after the 1917 Battle of Caporetto.

The Sacrario Militare was built in 1935 and houses the remains of soldiers from both sides of the conflict.

The climb from Romano d’Ezzelino is the most direct and dramatic of the Monte Grappa routes, with over 1,500 meters of elevation gain.
