The organ in the Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche in the Ostfriesland village of Uttum took its present form around the year 1660 when a good deal of older 16th and 17th century pipework was mounted in a new case. Its well-preserved and recently meticulously restored voice is reflective of the old Dutch style (a number of Dutch organ builders were active in this part of north west Germany during the 16th and 17th centuries).
The provision of Quintadena stops at both 16ft and 8 ft pitch is very rare for an organ of this size (just 9 stops). The fabulous renaissance 8ft 'Trompet' stop, like the similar example at nearby Westerhusen, is one of the very earliest surviving such ranks in the world. So too the III-IV rank 'Mixtur'.
In his typically wonderful improvised demonstration Sietze de Vries takes us on a complete tour of this very special historic organ's colour possibilities. The temperament is slightly modified Meantone.
