The United States has issued a strong new warning regarding the airspace surrounding Venezuela, after former US President Donald Trump announced that the region should be considered “completely closed.” Trump gave no further details but cautioned airlines, pilots, and individuals allegedly involved in drug and human trafficking to treat the area as a strict “no-fly zone,” according to his post on Truth Social.
Reuters reports that Washington is intensifying pressure on President Nicolás Maduro’s government amid rising military activity in the Caribbean. Sources indicate that Trump has already approved CIA covert operations inside Venezuela and is now hinting at possible ground operations.
Last week, the US aviation regulator warned airlines of “dangerous conditions” over Venezuela due to deteriorating security and increased military movements. Following the advisory, six major international airlines suspended flights—prompting Venezuela to revoke their operational rights.
The US accuses Maduro of involvement in drug trafficking, a charge he firmly denies, claiming Washington seeks to overthrow him—an attempt he says will be resisted by the Venezuelan people and military.
Since September, US forces have carried out at least 21 operations in the Caribbean and Pacific regions, resulting in 83 fatalities.
