"Canarios", published in 1674, is a set of variations on a harmonic scheme, evoking the folk music of Canary Islands with it's lively hemiola rhythms. It is a stroke of genius by Gaspar Sanz and probably the most famous composition for the baroque guitar. Canarios offers the player an opportunity to conclude the piece with an improvised strumming cadenza, which I enjoyed immensely, especially in this beautiful medieval church with its resonant acoustics and somewhat mysterious atmosphere. A baroque guitar is an instrument that relies on reverberation to make it really sing and dance: happily my home church of St. Catherine's in Turku has just the right kind of sound for the bright, quick speech of my guitar.
Performed by Tuomas Kourula on a baroque guitar in quarter comma meantone temperament. For Midsummer's Eve 2025.
