This Gospel reading is extraordinary because it draws from all four Gospels, recounting the journey from the Last Supper through Jesus’ arrest and trial. The apostles, exhausted from travel and tension, shared in the emotional and spiritual weight of these events.
The focus today is on what it means to truly follow Jesus. As Christians, we take on His name and His path; struggle, patience, and perseverance. While Christ’s sacrifice was once and for all, we are still called to offer our own form of sacrifice through endurance in hardship.
The Christian life doesn’t promise ease, but purpose. Salvation comes not through comfort, but through faithfully enduring the journey. Our hope lies in trusting that God is at work, even in suffering, and that the goal of living eternally with him is worth it.
The point is not ease, but purpose. Not just survival, but salvation.
