I was excited to share this dance with the community. As the Iranian revolution intensified, I felt a stronger pull to express myself through the movements and music of my heritage.
This is an Iranian style of dance that is known for its fluid form and mysticism. Iranians often refer to this style as 'son-nati.'
I feel this style suits the way my body likes to move; expanding, stretching, reaching, spinning, floating, surrendering. The music, of course, is the compelling force that resonates in my bones. I find the character of this piece a little unexpected and challenging to follow. I think that drew me to it as a way to learn to surrender to the flow rather than fight its momentum.
I no longer use choreography in performance, only as a component when I practice. The movements and development of the performance are improvised, created on the spot in response to the music as it resonates with me at that moment. When you find yourself moving in response to the music rather than thinking and trying to be ON the music, you have found your true voice.
I move and practice every day. I practice to feel my space, not to perfect the moves. I practice expanding range in my body, rather than to remember choreography. I do love choreography and it has a significant place in my dance background and training. It is necessary and enjoyable when it fits where you are in your journey, how you feel, your familiarity with the music, and your body. Creativity in all ways is valuable and required in order to grow and expand.
When you over-choreograph, though, you make no space for feeling and presence. When you over-practice, it's much harder to improvise. When it's my soul on display, I don't get attached to steps or choreography. I make space to co-create with my audience. Whether it is logistics or reading the room, some things are better left to be created in the moment.
