【厳島神社】なぜ海の中にあるの？――神を敬う建築の理由とは
広島県・宮島にある厳島神社。
世界遺産にも登録されたこの神社は、海に浮かぶような美しい姿で知られています。
でもなぜ、わざわざ“海の上”に建てられたのでしょうか？
実は、厳島（いつくしま）という島そのものが神聖な存在＝ご神体とされていたため、
人の足で直接踏むことを避けるべき場所と考えられていたようです。
そのため、社殿は“海の上”に建設され、
満潮時にはまるで海に浮かぶ神殿のような景観です。

🧠 プチ豆知識：
・平安時代、平清盛がこの壮麗な社殿を整備
・大鳥居は海から神を迎えるために設けられ、船で鳥居をくぐって参拝するのが正式なルートだったそうです
・さらに、大鳥居は地面に固定されておらず、“自重だけで立っている”構造！
・現在も、干潮と満潮でまったく違う風景を楽しめます

Why is Itsukushima Shrine built in the sea? A sacred design from ancient Japan
Itsukushima Shrine, located on the island of Miyajima in Hiroshima, is famous for appearing to float on the sea.
But why is it built above the water?
The reason lies in ancient beliefs:
The entire island was considered sacred — a deity in itself.
So instead of placing buildings directly on the land, the shrine was built above the water to avoid disturbing the sacred ground.

🧠 Trivia Highlights:
・Rebuilt by Taira no Kiyomori in the Heian period (12th century)
・The torii gate was placed to welcome deities arriving by sea
・In ancient times, boats would pass through the torii as part of sacred rituals
・The gate is not fixed into the seabed — it stands by its own weight!
