They all left this island.
Gola Island lies just off the coast of County Donegal. In the 19th century it was home to over a hundred people — fishermen, farmers, families trying to make a life on the edge of the Atlantic. By 1911 the population had already fallen to just 83, and through the 1960s the island emptied out. By the 1970s, Gola was completely abandoned.
The reasons were simple but brutal: harsh winters, no school, no doctor, no shop, and fewer chances to make a living from the land and sea. Life was easier on the mainland, and one by one, the families left.
Today, no one lives permanently on Gola. The old cottages stand ruined, scattered across the fields. Rusting cars, broken sheds, and stone walls tell the story of a community that couldn’t survive. In summer, some families return to renovated holiday homes, and the island comes alive again for a short time. But for most of the year, Gola remains silent.
In this video I cross over to the island, walk through the ruins, and share its story.
