In a significant judgment, the Delhi High Court has made it clear that a father cannot escape his responsibility towards his children even if the mother is more educated or earns more than him.

The court ruled that child maintenance and upbringing are the legal, moral, and social responsibilities of both parents. A higher income of the mother does not exempt the father from his duty to financially support and care for his children.

The bench led by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed that when a working mother earns more and also takes care of the children, it means she is bearing a double burden. In such cases, a father cannot make excuses to avoid his responsibilities.

This judgment came while rejecting a man’s plea challenging an order to pay ₹30,000 per month as interim maintenance for his three children. The husband argued that his income was ₹9,000 while his wife earned ₹34,500. However, the High Court upheld the lower court’s order and dismissed his petition.

The court emphasized that law ensures equality but does not allow working mothers to be left alone with physical, financial, and emotional exhaustion, and that children’s welfare remains paramount.

The New Year 2026 has begun with a major blow of inflation. On the very first day of the year, oil marketing companies have increased the prices of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders across the country.

From Delhi to Mumbai and Kolkata to Chennai, the revised LPG prices came into effect from 1 January 2026, with a hike of up to ₹111 per cylinder. However, there is some relief for households as the prices of 14 kg domestic LPG cylinders remain unchanged.

In Delhi, the price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has increased from ₹1580.50 to ₹1691.50. Similarly, prices have risen sharply in Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. This comes after a series of price revisions in previous months, where commercial LPG prices were reduced in November and December 2025.

While commercial LPG prices continue to fluctuate, domestic LPG cylinder prices have remained stable since April, offering some relief to common consumers.
