Message from the black holes - PART 2 | SLICE EXPERTS

It is the birth of the neutrino astronomy. For the first time, astrophysicists can detect extra-terrestrial neutrinos in the ice of the South Pole. With a gigantic detector, scientists have discovered their traces. Neutrinos are the most common elementary particles and at the same time the most mysterious. As these particles are invisible to us, we cannot check if they have a mass. Also, they are not electrically charged, and rarely interact with other matter. But for scientists, each of the tiny neutrinos is a potential messenger that carries direct information about its origin in space. Many discoveries of astrophysics have enormously extended our idea of the cosmos, but the puzzling core questions of science are still unanswered: how did the universe come to be? What keeps our world together? Where do we come from? The detection of extra-galactic neutrinos is a new key to answering these questions.
