Beautiful beyond Belief, Savage beyond Reason: The Eryri Marathon 2024

As the sun began to rise over Snowdonia National Park, I found myself in the beautiful village of Llanberis, the starting point of the legendary Marathon Eryri. This isn’t just any marathon; it’s a test of grit and determination, winding its way around the majestic Snowdon massif.

The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as runners gathered, each one ready to tackle the demanding course that would take us through enchanting places like Beddgelert, Rhyd-ddu, and Waunfawr. I still remember the heart-pounding ascent of the Llanberis Pass, where the views stretched endlessly, only to be followed by a thrilling descent to the stunning lake shore of Llyn Dinas.

But what truly sets this marathon apart is the elevation—an impressive 838 meters of ups and downs that challenge even the most seasoned runners. Every step is a reminder of the rugged beauty that surrounds you, with the dramatic landscape of Snowdonia serving as both a backdrop and opponent!!

The marathon has a rich history, having been established in 1984 - Celebrating it's 40th Anniversary this year.

When the National Trust could no longer support it in 2007, the local community rallied together, forming Snowdonia Marathon Cyf to keep the spirit alive. Their efforts have paid off, raising over £40,000 for local causes, making this event not just a race but a celebration of community and resilience.

As I crossed the finish line, shattered but elated, I realized this marathon is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a fabulous adventure through one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, a true testament to the power of nature and community.
