Any structural member subjected to axial compressive load is generally known as Column or Strut. If a member is oriented vertically then it is known as Column and if inclined then it is known as a Strut. Different criteria’s with respect to Cross Section, Length or Height, Slenderness Ratio etc. is there for Column and Strut. For analysis purpose or say finding Collapse or Buckling load, Euler’s equation is used for Long column while Rankin’s Formula can be used for both Short Column and Strut as well as Long Column.
