Starlink for Airstream Range Test for Remote Work From A Cornfield

In April 2025, I ventured out to see if I could work remotely from an Airstream using a laptop and a Starlink Satellite System. I was concerned because my work days are busy and I depend on reliable WiFi for video calls and frequent use of various cloud-based software tools as my tech stack (like Google Docs and Sheets, Slack, Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Jira, Confluence, SproutVideo, YouTube, MailChimp, HubSpot, and many more). I wasn't 100% sure if Starlink Internet could be used in an RV for heavy bandwidth users.

To evaluate the efficacy of Starlink, I towed a 2018 Airstream Bambi from outside New Orleans to a great campsite in Champaign, Illinois to experience the 2024 Eclipse while working. My campsite was adjacent to a breezy cornfield on one side and a lake on the other. I set up the Starink satellite dish next to the Airstream and ran the cord through my screen door to the router inside the trailer.

I was excited, thinking "If I can work outside all day with strong WiFi, I can be one of those digital nomads, working from my Airstream anywhere."

I decided to test how far away from the router I could wander and still maintain a strong enough WiFi signal to conduct my work for a SaaS video hosting company called SproutVideo. I thought an added bonus of extended Starlink range would be taking my laptop to a beach or lake, on top of a hill, to a picnic area, or anywhere else to work.

Little did I know that Starlink covers up to 380 feet from the router with a strong enough signal to communicate with my coworker in New York, via Slack. That answered the question, "How far away can you put Starlink?"

To help visualize what a range of 380 feet looks like, imagine sitting at the top of the Statue of Liberty for a remote Zoom video conference call (380' = one-and-one-fourth times as tall as The Statue of Liberty). Or, climbing to the top of the tallest Giant Sequoia in the Sierra Nevadas with an ice-cold pale ale to watch a few episodes of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown (380' is one-and-a-half times as tall as a Giant Sequoia).

That's some serious range.

In summary, I successfully conducted my daily business – using Slack, video calls, research, writing and editing – no problemo. I could work up to 380 feet from the Starlink router. Given my location with little obstructions, I wonder if I had the ideal scenario to get the best Starlink for Airstream range?

Furthermore, after I punched out for the day, I did some cloud-based video editing with Flixier, uploaded videos to SproutVideo, and watched movies on Netflix. I even had a couple beers with a random Bigfoot.
