Today marks the ninetieth birthday of the remarkable French pianist Thierry de Brunhoff, whose life took an extraordinary turn when he embraced monasticism, assuming the name Brother Thierry Jean at the En-Calcat Abbey in France in 1974. To commemorate this significant milestone, we present this archival recording from 1962—which was dedicated to his distinguished mentor, Alfred Cortot—and offers invaluable insights into de Brunhoff's pianistic artistry through a selection of Chopin's masterworks: Berceuse in D-flat Major, Op. 57; Fantaisie-Impromptu in C-sharp Minor, Op. 66; Waltz in C-sharp Minor, Op. 64, No. 2; and Ballade No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 52. From across the miles, we join in spirit to celebrate this meaningful moment, extending our sincerest wishes.
