La Muse naissante - Deuxième Livre, Septième Ordre F. Couperin 1668-1733

In my recording of La Muse Naissante by François Couperin, performed on a Taskin harpsichord via GrandOrgue at 415 Hz in quarter-comma meantone, the music unfolds gently, as if awakening slowly. This piece belongs to the Deuxième Livre, Septième Ordre of Couperin’s harpsichord works. The first section, illustrated by the lira, glows with warmth and clarity, each note delicately articulated, especially on the upper manual, whose sound is warm and soft, enhancing the elegance of Couperin’s ornamentation and the bright character of the “birth” motif. I used only this registration, despite the absence of explicit indications in the score, to bring out the clarity and color of the piece.

The paintings of the lira and the angels are both by François Boucher (1703–1770), one of the leading Rococo painters of 18th-century France, celebrated for his playful compositions, delicate colors, and graceful figures. His imagery brings a visual counterpart to the light and luminous character of the music.

As the piece transitions into the minor section, represented by the angel, a serene shadow envelops the melody. Here, I used only the 4′ stop, creating a more intimate, restrained sound that highlights the expressive tension of the minor harmonies. The meantone temperament allows the natural color of the chords and suspensions to speak intimately. The touch of the Taskin, sensitive and responsive, enables a lyrical phrasing that sings even in the quietest passages.

The angel embodies a tender, contemplative atmosphere. All of this happens calmly, letting the listener dwell in the subtleties of French Baroque expression, where every ornament and cadence is imbued with life and character.

Na minha gravação de La Muse Naissante de François Couperin, executada no cravo Taskin via GrandOrgue em 415 Hz e temperamento mesotônico de 1/4 de vírgula, a música se desenrola de maneira calma, como um suave despertar. Esta peça pertence ao Deuxième Livre, Septième Ordre das obras para cravo de Couperin. A primeira parte, ilustrada pela lira, brilha com calor e clareza, cada nota delicadamente articulada, especialmente no teclado superior, cujo som é cálido e suave, realçando a elegância das ornamentações de Couperin e o brilho do motivo do “nascimento”. Utilizei apenas este registro, apesar da ausência de indicações explícitas na partitura, para evidenciar a clareza e a riqueza tímbrica da peça.

As pinturas da lira e dos anjos são ambas de François Boucher (1703–1770), um dos principais pintores do Rococó francês do século XVIII, famoso por suas composições delicadas, cores suaves e figuras graciosas. Sua arte oferece um complemento visual ao caráter luminoso e leve da música.

Ao transitar para a seção em tom menor, representada pelo anjo, uma sombra serena envolve a melodia. Nesta parte, utilizei apenas o 4′, criando um som mais íntimo e contido, que realça a tensão expressiva das harmonias menores. O temperamento mesotônico permite que a cor natural dos acordes e suspensões se manifeste de forma íntima. O toque sensível do Taskin possibilita uma fraseação lírica, que canta mesmo nas passagens mais suaves.

O anjo encarna uma atmosfera terna e contemplativa. Tudo isso acontece de maneira calma, convidando o ouvinte a habitar as sutilezas da expressão barroca francesa, onde cada ornamento e cadência está impregnada de vida e caráter.
