► GAME DESCRIPTION
When Queen Theena breaks tradition and chooses her younger daughter, Kameo, to inherit the Element of Power and the Wotnot, the decision enrages Kalus, the older daughter of Queen Theena and the rightful heir by tradition. Feeling betrayed, Kalus frees the troll king Thorn, the two form an alliance, and launch an attack on the Enchanted Kingdom.
Kameo’s family is kidnapped, her Elemental Warriors are torn from her, and she barely escapes with her life. Guided by the Mystic and the spirit Ortho, Kameo sets out to reclaim all 10 Elemental Warriors, rescue her family, and confront Thorn and Kalus—while also uncovering the truth about her own past.
► History
Kameo was released exclusively for the Xbox 360 as one of Microsoft’s first-party launch titles. In June 2019, the game received a resolution upgrade to run at native 4K on Xbox One X. Later, on November 15, 2021, Kameo was updated with FPS Boost for Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, (while caring over resolution boost for Xbox Series X only) allowing the game to run at 60FPS through backward compatibility. This game does not support Auto HDR on modern Xbox consoles.
► Reception
Kameo: Elements of Power received generally favorable reviews, earning a 79/100 on Metacritic. Critics praised its vibrant visuals, imaginative art direction, and sweeping orchestral score, calling it a technical showcase for the Xbox 360 launch. The Elemental Warrior transformation system was also well-received. However, reviewers criticized the repetitive combat, overbearing tutorials, and a story that lacked emotional weight.
Despite selling over 700,000 copies, Kameo underperformed commercially relative to Microsoft’s expectations. A sequel, Kameo 2, entered early development with a darker tone but was ultimately cancelled in 2013, which was confirmed by Phil Spencer. The cancellation was due to a combination of low sales, Rare’s internal restructuring, and Microsoft shifting the studio’s focus toward developing games for the Kinect.
